K-12 education trained many students to indent every paragraph of their text without knowing why. Indentation is not a universal rule; typographic conventions evolved for practical reasons before they were mystified. According to Bringhurst1:

The function of a paragraph indent is to mark a pause, setting the paragraph apart from what precedes it. If a paragraph is preceded by a title or subhead, the indent is superfluous and can therefore be omitted, as it is here.

So, this theme deliberately avoided indenting the first paragraph of a section.

The text size for code blocks is optimized for printing—they are slightly larger and thinner than usual.
